Childhood Survey
What was your favorite tv show or cartoon?
I loved the Muppet Babies. Later on, I loved Xena and the '90s Star Treks.
What was your favorite song?
The Main Theme of Final Fantasy IV, and later Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls
What was your favorite toy?
I'm not sure I was ever very big on toys, but I loved my Nintendo, Super Nintendo and Game Boy.
What was your favorite game?
Video game? I had so many. Final Fantasy IV (II originally in the U.S.) on the Super NES. I also really liked the Quest for Glory games on PC.
What was your biggest fear?
Abandonment. Or maybe that is/was my biggest fear now? If so, does that mean it was then? I think I was afraid of being normal. If someone ever tried to compare me to other kids my age, I couldn't stand it.
What was your favorite fantasy or daydream?
I wanted to be the hero, or a hero. In particular, I wanted to be a great protector, or a knight errant. I fantasized about combat, which is odd. I don't think I knew or understood then what violence really meant. I am pretty much a pacifist now, yet that fantasy/daydream of protecting others still surfaces, and I have been tremendously overprotective in romantic relationships, and maybe overprotective in general. (Maybe, deep down, I just want to be protected myself. I want so badly to save others, most critically demonstrated in how badly I wanted to rescue Mary, when I couldn't and can't rescue myself.)
What was your favorite food?
I honestly can't remember, but I was a fat kid. Everything/anything? Carby stuff? I would say pizza, but I'm not sure when my sick love of pizza developed. It seemed to be later. I think any food that soothed me was my favorite.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a writer. I used to fantasize about being a musician (one dream I actually achieved, although to basically no end). (I suppose I am a writer, too, but I wanted to do it for a living.) I never had any ambitions except creative ones.
What was your favorite book?
I loved Jane Yolen's Pit Dragon Saga. I think my favorite book was probably The Hobbit, though.
What was your favorite movie?
It was, and still is, The 'Burbs.
Who was your favorite author?
I loved Joe Dever's Lone Wolf books. I don't know if he was my favorite author or if I had a favorite author.
What smell instantly brings you back to your childhood?
The smell of books, or the smell of video game instruction manuals. There are other smells, too, but it's hard to think of them when you aren't smelling them.
Who was your crush?
Gabrielle from Xena: Warrior Princess
What was your favorite subject in school?
English
Who was your best friend?
Kris (none of you know him, though, so it seems a bit pointless to mention him)
Who did you admire?
Jean-Luc Picard (Captain, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D), Ben Sisko (Captain, Space Station Deep Space Nine), and Kathryn Janeway (Captain, USS Voyager). Oh yeah, and probably Xena and Gabrielle.
What's the stupidest thing you can remember doing as a child?
I did a lot of stupid things. I remember scratching my mom's car with a stick for no reason. She was upset, and I even said that I have no idea why I did it. I also beat her antique oak table with a hammer. Why? Again, no idea. I was such a calm, gentle, placid, shy child. It was entirely out of character.
What's the best summer break of your childhood?
I think they all were. I remember the smell of late May, those glorious mornings at the beginning of summer vacation. You had the whole day ahead of you, and the whole summer. Actually, the smell of May/June mornings still reminds me of Dragon Quest. There's another favorite game for you.

Date: 2017-05-03 10:21 pm (UTC)Hard to go wrong with A Link to the Past, though. The day Captron Games called to say it was in stock, I answered and yelled with joy into the phone. (I used to answer the phone as a child. Now, as an adult when I actually need to answer phones, I have a really hard time doing it. Go fig.)

Date: 2017-05-04 10:17 am (UTC)I used to make prank calls, well, sort of I guess, when I was younger. I would look up people up who shared their name with a celebrity and I would call them up and ask them questions. I called Micheal Jackson once and asked him about his monkey. I dunno, I was a latchkey kid, I had plenty of time to get up to stupid things while the parents were at work.
Oh and hey, No worries. I didn't take offense :)

Date: 2017-05-05 12:29 am (UTC)I am super thankful for the (unexpected) popularity of texting, just because it allows me to not have to make phones calls pretty much ever. There are times I have enjoyed talking on the phone (I have excuses for that, too, SOB STORIES FOR ANOTHER DAY). Typically, I live in fear of it. People did not understand that in the past, but I'm meeting more and more people (mostly young people, some not so young) who share my phone phobia.
I have no idea at what point I began to fear the phone. I used to make prank calls, too! They were not at all as clever as yours, however, and consisted mostly of calling up pizza restaurants and saying, "Your pizza sucks and it smells like ducks!" repeatedly.
When I was a latchkey kid, I just rushed home to my Super Nintendo (funny how topics circle around). I didn't worry about anything else back then, not exercise, diet, chores, certainly not homework... It was Super Nintendo from like 3:30-9:30 with minimal breaks every night! (Geez, I wonder how I got fat)
