That seems like the right option to me! Though I tend to compare kids with my cats. "Oh, yeah, my cats TOTALLY do that, too! Like, this one time..." Ha.
I always just end up talking about feelings. "I wonder if that must feel like BLAH BLAH for [kid's name]." Once I start speaking of their children as human beings, they often lose interest in actually talking about them.
