Basically, you are supposed to come up with a list of 10 bands (although I think artists in general would work), but you have to do this BEFORE looking at the questions. So if you think you might want to do this, make your list first before looking!
Here is my list of bands. I made it kind of haphazardly, and there are maybe one or two on here that I don't even know very well. I think that might actually make it more interesting, though. I thought about changing it, but I had already kind of seen the questions a bit, and again, this might make it more fun anyway.
1) Live
2) The Beatles
3) Dishwalla
4) Stone Temple Pilots
5) The Police
6) Tonic
7) Collective Soul
8) Audioslave
9) Radiohead
10)Counting Crows
(Man, now I'm thinking of everything I left off, including my favorite band of all time, Pearl Jam.)
What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
The first Tonic song I ever heard was "You Wanted More". As I've said elsewhere, about every decade, I happen to hear a song on the radio that I actually like. I heard this song and thought, man, now THIS is how you do a radio single! I still fricking love this song.
What is your favorite song of 8?
Wow, my favorite Audioslave song--I almost have to think of a few favorites and just pick one from there. I don't know if I can for sure pick ONE favorite. I love Last Remaining Light, Like a Stone, and Show Me How to Live might be my favorite, BUT, I will pick one that was never on an album (but should have been) as my favorite.
What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?
Live has left an impact on the way I think about music (gee, what a generic answer), what I think about lyrics. Some of their songs, I don't really like, but my favorite ones are always kind of weird. The lyrics are weird, the construction is always a little strange. It's like they took normal song DNA and sequenced it in a strange manner. Yeah, some of their songs are generic as can be, but even their arguably most famous single, I Alone, is a totally strange. The chords are pretty normal, but how they fit is weird. The lyrics are kind of normal, but they are peppered with bizarre concepts. As a result, when I write music, some of their strangeness definitely trickles in. He definitely sings strangely, and I hope I don't take a whole lot of that. I also liked that he wrote about Buddhism, Love (as a cosmic concept, not romance), philosophy...
Ah, 1995, when you could be a fucking dirty, bizarre rock band, get a record deal doing that, blow it out as authentic and strange as you see fit, and get a standing ovation for it.
What are your favorite lyrics of 5?
I haven't listened to The Police enough as an adult to have favorite lyrics. I listened to them mostly as an infant (go figure), because I could understand lyrics really. And, I guess maybe it's not their lyrics that I like the most: it's the sort of fusion of funk and reggae with pop-rock.
I sort of love everything about this song, including the lyrics, even though I don't actually know/understand all of them (still!).
How many times have you seen 4 live?
I've never seen Stone Temple Pilots live, and, as far as I can prove, there is no way I ever can since Scott has passed away. I could be the singer if they want, though, and we could do a tribute.
I'm not sure I could have handled them live. It looks a little crazy for me. I'm more of a sit and listen kind of person, not a jump around like a lunatic kind of person.
What is your favorite song by 7?
Oh man. I am going to have to go through all their songs to pick one. Or maybe I should just go with my instinct. It might have to be The World I Have Known, or maybe...
...Simple.
Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad?
Well, I am sad a lot, and sad at songs that other people wouldn't be sad at. Even songs I really like that aren't supposed to be sad make me sad, and sometimes I like to be sad. I feel like I keep choosing the singles. It makes me seem kind of lame.
This is a song written about kids and reminded me of hot, aimless summers. I was already nostalgic as a teenager (15), remembering being younger. Now when I hear the song, I sort of think of myself right now. I also like that they call God "her."
What is your favorite song by 9?
Man, why did I put them on here? I have so many favorites by them, and I can't listen to them anymore. Anyway, I liked this one before I ever met her. When I was a teenager, my buddy Jon bought this album at Walmart. I didn't "get" Radiohead yet then. It took me a while. Man, I miss Radiohead, but it just brings up too many memories and emotions.
When did you first get into 2?
I'm not sure I ever got into The Beatles, being raised on them. They were just sort of part of me. I really started to appreciate them, however, when I was first learning to sing and play guitar at age 18 or 19.
How did you get into 3?
Well, I had heard Dishwalla's Counting Blue Cars on the radio, but at some point, my 8th grade science teacher gave me their album, Pet Your Friends, and I practically wore it out over the years. So I suppose that's how. I was 15 or so.
What is your favorite song by 4?
Sheesh, I'm not sure I have a favorite Stone Temple Pilots song. I will now depart to think about it, decide, and paste it in here.
I would change some things about this song, like I think it could go from brilliant to beyond brilliant with some lyrical tweaks and some changes to the arrangement.
How many times have you seen 9 live?
Radiohead: zero.
What is a good memory concerning 10?
I bought one of their CDs used and really liked it, in particular the song I'll paste in here. I just remember being parked in my car down town (I think I was waiting for someone) listening to it over and over and thinking how good and raw it was. I also really liked how he sung it.
Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad?
I think there are quite a few that do or would or could. There are a few I can listen to and weep, although it isn't necessarily sadness.
What is your favorite song of 1?
Hm, I picked I Alone earlier (Live), so is that my favorite? Let me think a bit. Well, I couldn't choose one and gave up. This is not my favorite. I have just recently developed a new appreciation for this one.

Date: 2017-05-12 04:55 am (UTC)Radiohead-- How do you even pick a favorite radiohead song?
Tonic-- I remember them, my mom had their CD!
I feel like I had more to say, in fact I'm sure I did, but I'm fading. I should really be in bed. I shall have to revisit this.

Date: 2017-05-12 05:05 am (UTC)At least it's Thursday. I had meant to be in bed at 10!
Hehe, was Tonic kind of an old people band? Not that your mom is old. Just wondering, because I knew a guy in like 2003 or so, and he was maybe 50 at the time (just a wild guess, might have been older), and Tonic was his favorite band! They do not seem like an old person band, so maybe it's coincidence. (Again, not that your mom is old.)
Narrowly missed meeting Live at a really tiny hotel bar. Apparently I walked right past. But, they were there. The lead singer was not drinking, because it was not good for his voice (or some other reason--maybe he was spiritually opposed). I narrowly missed meeting Rick Springfield (I really liked one of his more recent albums in particular) at a different hotel bar. Both of these were here in Minot, ND. Anyway, I really liked them (Live and Rick), especially at the time. But I don't know what I would have said anyway.
